Project
Overview

Our challenge was to prototype an interactive kiosk that’s unique for the marketplace, feasible, and desirable for a target context and audience. We discovered an opportunity within gyms and developed a kiosk that assists with workout plans, lkadjlfadsg

Time: 4 weeks

Tools: Figma, Adobe Illustrator

Team: Jasmine Tran, Daniel Andrews, Marcos Montano

[1] Opportunity

In order to find a solution to our challenge, we had to scope out areas that might desire a unique kiosk. We recognized that challenges = opportunities.

We conducted fieldwork interviews at a gym in order to identify problems.

INTERVIEW QUESTIONS

  1. How often do you go the gym? If you don't go the gym, have you ever thought about going?

  2. Can you describe your inital experience with learning what to do at the gym?

  3. Can you recall an experience when the gym is very busy?

  4. When you first entered the gym, do you remember the biggest challenges you faced?

  5. What do you think about using a kiosk to provide information about machine availability and workout plans? Would you use it?

We recognized three pain points from the five interviewees:

  1. Frustration with gym experience

All interviewees reflected on feeling intimidated or confused by gym equipment

  1. Need for personalized guidance

Beginners tend to need more guidance, while seasoned gym-goers can rely on their own knowledge or routines

  1. Desire for convenience

Gym-goers often face challenges with scheduling, especially when the gym is busy

[2] User Research

After discovering a potential opportunity in gyms, we created personas in order to have a representation of our target users:

PERSONAS

We then created storyboards to visually map out the users’ frustrations and see if the problems were relatable and if the proposed solutions were desired.

STORYBOARDS

STORYBOARD INTERVIEWS

  • 3/5 users recalled a time where they had difficulty with using gym equipment

  • 3/5 users found themselves in a situation where they wanted guidance in the gym but didn’t want to spend money on a personal trainer

  • 5/5 users felt a kiosk could offer a helpful way to manage their gym membership

[3] Lo-Fi Wireframes

Based on our pain points, we decided our kiosk would have three main functions:

  1. A way to see available equipment updated in real-time

  2. Workout plans curated to beginner gym goers goals

  3. A way for gym goers to manage their gym membership without the assistance of staff

TASKS

  1. View available machines – see if there are any squat racks open

  2. Now view the workout plans – select “full body workout”

  3. Sign up for a membership

INTERVIEW QUESTIONS

  1. What do you think about the visual design of the interface?

  2. Was there any part of the flow that seemed unintuitive or caused confusion?

  3. Was there any part of the design that you found helpful?

  4. Would you add or remove any part of the user flow we have?

  5. Is there anything else you would like to mention?

[5] Moodboard & Style Guide

We listed some adjectives we wanted to convey:

  • Confident

  • Energetic

  • Motivational

  • Bold

  • Inviting

Using this, we created a moodboard to get an idea of colors, typefaces, and design elements.

And then used the moodboard to create a style guide:

Tasks:

  1. View available machines – see if there are any squat racks open

  2. Now view the workout plans – select “full body workout”

  3. Sign up for a membership

Interview Questions:

Going forward, we would likely make the following changes:

  • Maintain the streamlined structure, avoid nesting pages too deeply

  • Add a title to indicate that each card represents an exercise within a full workout, focus on pictorial illustration rather than text

  • Add some filtering or search functionality to help narrow results down and make the information clearer

Conclusion

We presented our final kiosk at a marketplace exchange alongside other creative kiosks!
